This picture was taken in Deep Purple's dressing room at the Cologne Sporthalle (Germany) - March 29th, 1975.

Rene recollects for us his special time with Deep Purple MKIV - thanks Rene

Quote:
I took the pictures in Germany myself. I was 15 years old then. I was a member of the Dutch Deep Purple fanclub. We phoned the Purple-management and they agreed we'd meet the band in Cologne.

What I didn't know at the time, was that Ritchie Blackmore had told the band the day before, that he would quit Purple. The support act in Cologne was Elf. Ritchie already teamed up with them, before the concert. I met Ronnie James Dio backstage that night...

Earlier that day, I was waiting in the hotel lobby to meet Deep Purple. The first bandmember to show up (all Purple-members travelled separately in a Mercedes driven by a chauffeur), was GLENN HUGHES. He was with his girlfriend, Vicky. Her twin-sister Jacky had a relationship with Ian Paice.

While I was waiting for the band, some people of the Purple-management showed up. I remember I talked to a guy called Graham Nolder.

Now the interesting part of the story: There was also a young French woman around, called Muriel. I drank a few coke's with her in the Hotel Bar. She was a lovely woman, but she showed an unhealthy interest in Ritchie Blackmore. In fact she'd already stalked him for a while. The hat Glenn is wearing on one of the pictures, is in fact her hat. GLENN was rather kind to her, Paice hugged her and Coverdale and Lord ignored her. Ritchie said nothing and just pushed her away. He was already fed up with her. Muriel is in fact (as Ronnie Dio told me one year later) the woman in the song "Starstruck".

As I told you, we met three of the Purple members in the dressing-room. Lord wasn't around and Blackmore had his own dressing-room. They where very kind. It is such a long time ago, so I can't remember the exact words. It had a deep impact on me though. The concert later that evening was great! Elf was great. Purple was fantastic!

I'm almost 48 years old now, but my love for the music of GLENN is still great. Every time he plays in Holland or Germany, I'm there. The last time I saw him, I was very moved. To see a lifetime influence play and sing so wonderful after all these years means a lot to me.

What a fantastic story Rene. Never knew the meaning behind 'Starstruck' until now.

Great read, thanks.
